100 Day Project Three – Days 68, 69, 70, 71, 72

DAYS 68, 69, 70, 71, 72 (August 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd 2018)

WORSHIP IN THE HOUSE OF A— (first of many drafts)

Damn her
congenital restlessness.

She searches,
doubtless in vain
(if only it were in vain)
for her other half—
the whole cleft in two
in the mythic past.

I once thought,
to my heart’s ruin
to be that long lost love.

Would I
if I could
see myself
through her prying eyes—
one of which sees too close,
and too far the other?

Or better left
her thoughts unheard
and only known
by the cold turning
of her cherished head?

The 100 Day Project

The 100 Day Project

The 100 Day Project is a creativity excavation. It’s about unearthing dormant or unrealized creativity by committing to a daily practice everyday for 100 days.
Creativity is a skill. The more we practice, the more skilled we become. Practice takes time. Practice takes commitment. Practice is a radical act in this speeded up world. Through practice, we develop a creative habit. Through habit, we reconnect with and know ourselves again as a creative being.

I started this, my third, 100 Day Project on June 12th, 2018. My project is to write at least one first-draft stanza inspired by a poem, a quote, an idea, a painting—anything, really (or nothing at all) and to write at least one hundred shitty first-draft words of my novel. I’ll post the results here.

Enjoy!

WORD (first of many drafts)

In nature we find our tidings.
Find your lesson in the river’s tide.
Melting snows rush headlong for the sea,
past rock and fallen tree,
tumbling from the mountaintop.

Child of Olympus—
You were once a word that fell like rain.

There is life and death in life—
tumbling, tumbling
past ruined bridge and hillside.

There is life and death in life—
in every caught fish,
crying calf and butchered ox—
tumbling, tumbling
past carriage, town
and creaking watermill.

Tumbling, tumbling
into a buoyant, breathless stillness—
and in the fog-drenched distance,
under a wine-red sky,
is all the world in miniature.

The ocean swells like an enraged beast,
as if Amphitrite had loosed her husband’s cart.

You drink the briny deep
and sink into her slumbering, loving clutches,
having spent your patrimony on the broken crags
of this awful, delightful, bequeathed world.
How will your accounts be settled or will they be settled at all?
The market, too, will be washed away with the tide.

Novel X

Note: I’ll forsake poetry this weekend and write many prosaic words.

WILDFLOWERS (thirdish draft)

A peasant boy gathers wildflowers
for a girl—now a ghost of a girl—he once saw
walking along the bourn on the outskirts
of a greening field.

He imagines her toes testing the cool, clear water—
perhaps it is too cold—
does it matter when there is so much life and love
in all this sun and song?

He plays a little game
of words called ‘Futility’—
for his eyes wordless see
and his ears wordless hear
and his lips wordless part
and all that passes between his teeth
is her aspired memory.

But still—
he likes to play—
It keeps her close.

Daily(ish) Word Count: 177

EXCERPT

Dean Redgreene was sleeping on Button’s headscreen. He woke with a start, shuffled some papers and said, “Burt Buckner tirelessly grooms himself in the hope of impressing the lovely Charlot Bell. This and more at eleven.”

DAYS 55, 56 (August 5th, 6th 2018)

NATURE (unfinished)

People don’t remember
the way it used to be.
The yardstick of nature
is only a foot now.

TO WALK (unfinished)

Walk in want of nothing
in the wolf-light; the way
you once wandered; weaving
each moment into the next—
a tapestry of your one
god-given self.

A COMPANY OF ANGELS (unfinished)

Provisionless—
armed only with my heart’s calling,
faltering in a narrow corridor
between the beginning and yet another troubled birth—
the doors burst open.

I SAW YOU IN A PAINTING (unfinished)

I saw you in a painting—
under a bone black sky.
Behind lemon yellow windows,
souls, like tallow candles, consume themselves—
in mirth and fear,
in shame and longing,
in tendernesses.

Would I but expose my wounds to them—
frailties of which I’m too ashamed
to share. Why add to their crushing burden?
Better to swim above the serried, terracotta rooftops—
a minim lost in ocean lights.

HALF-THOUGHTS (unfinished)

They march
like grim-faced soldiers from the front
ragged, exhausted, hopeless,
colorless, like an old movie—
a dreary, funereal procession of half-hearted thoughts—
half-dead,
that bud
then wither
but never bloom.
They seem so shameful—
offensive and artless.

This is what it’s like
to be half-asleep
under a moth-eaten quilt
hidden in the gloom
in a dark damp room.

Freight cars clatter
on the darkest hour.
The train head bellows—
the echo measures miles,
tens of miles,
hundreds, perhaps.

I wake, stark-faced
and remember,
and all my fractured thoughts,
are burned up
in a terrible sunburst
of prescient vision.

SERPENT SUN (unfinished)

The serpent sun of bronze, warlike man
breathes fire in his fingers,
fire on his wings,
fire in his eyes,
to scorch the far-flung land.

It rises
over all his savage nations
and falls
on his vainglorious dust—
a bellyful for sleeping vultures
in the corpse-strewn desert
of his vile, forgotten deeds.

SUMMER AFTERNOON (fragments)

I catch her breath like a hawk
upon a pendulous breeze—
untrammeled by shame—
by an albatross of regret.

Polyps of sweat
burst my bronzing skin.
My face unfolds
for the sun—
bends to the tips
of her fingers—
hot, gilt, curious
and resurrecting.

One day you’ll walk like her—
like a broken marionette.

A subtle distance in years
disjoints your limbs from hers.

It’s her pain you feel—
a malignant baton.

This terrible body—
at once so lovely and horrifying.
