100 Day Project Three – Days 37, 38, 39

DAYS 37, 38, 39 (July 18th, 19th, 20th 2018)

I’M LEFT ONLY WITH YOUR VESTIGE (fragement)

I’m left only with your vestige,
to roll you on my tongue
and taste your balmy vapor.

I may pluck your shade
from a scape subterranean
where you herded turn
in dull, susurrant circles.

Is that my hand outstretched
like a fishhook?
Are those my lips
like a lonely matron at a boarder’s door,
bending for the keyhole?

The 100 Day Project

The 100 Day Project

The 100 Day Project is a creativity excavation. It’s about unearthing dormant or unrealized creativity by committing to a daily practice everyday for 100 days.
Creativity is a skill. The more we practice, the more skilled we become. Practice takes time. Practice takes commitment. Practice is a radical act in this speeded up world. Through practice, we develop a creative habit. Through habit, we reconnect with and know ourselves again as a creative being.

I started this, my third, 100 Day Project on June 12th, 2018. My project is to write at least one first-draft stanza inspired by a poem, a quote, an idea, a painting—anything, really (or nothing at all) and to write at least one hundred shitty first-draft words of my novel. I’ll post the results here.

Enjoy!

THAT’S HER

Time won’t spoil her spirit
but crack the cocoon that is her body open.

Winds won’t break her wings
that have laughed and cried for flying.

She’ll not shrink from rake or plough
or rest beneath the harvest moon
but cast her wide-eyed net into
a sea of hope and longing.

WHAT’S YOUR NAME?

What’s your name?
I’ll call you ‘mine’!
No friend but you with whom I’ll dance
upon the shallow graves.

But why dance here
among the long and restless dead?
Let’s frolic by the sea instead!

We’ll make our way
from moon and wood to sun and sea—
our passage born
winged and gilded upon the morn—
from path and sylvan canopy,
to harbor and forgotten quay.

Loose Argo’s lines, beloved mine!
Set sail upon the silver sea!
Upon her magic prow we’ll sing
to golden lyre an offering
to Pheobus’ fires for tailwinds strong—
prophetic wings we’ll race upon.

DAY 29 (July 10th, 2018)

BETWEEN TWO DARK SEAS

between two dark seas—
the same dark sea—
soul waters flood a sinuous straight—
We cannot drown or
run aground
on jagged cliffs
or fathoms down.

I boasted once
and called myself navigator,
but verily bound—
the sextant round
plots eerily upright
by some spectral hand.

TROUBLED LIVES

Troubled lives
garishly painted
crudely hewn idols
of disfigured dreams
now shards in the wake
of a simian traipse.

ALL IN CASEMENT WINDOW

all in a casement window—
a boy behind bars
crookedly drawn by
rivulets of rain
dreams dewy dreams,
and, in turn, consumes
oceans in fiery vision—
oceans boiled up
by the fallen sun.

SECRET GARDEN

We dallied in the secret garden–
our legs variously crossed and uncomposed.
We played like arcadian
children, unharried by prod
and switch, insensible to
the infirm watchtowers–
both comical and crude–
that crumble on the periphery
of our walled experience.

LITTLE DEATH

What is this? This little death?
This loss of heart and stolen breath.
This waterfall dry of feeling—
This echo of mountains mute—
this rolling fog of dreams by half
over vague, imagined miles.

WHEN WE QUIT THE SHIVERY NEST

When we quit the shivery nest
where once we huddled under dark
and our souls again are born
 hanging stars–
I hope to know you still
as now you are and smile,
and by you known across the lone
 midnight mile.

That torrent of memories
yielded no more answers.
It once overflowed the riverbanks,
