100 Day Project Three – Day 11

DAY 11 (June 22nd, 2018)

Words pour out of me
like blood from a struck animal.

EXCERPT

After discussing my dissertation with my professor (the system renowned Professor S’Aerhir—you may have heard of him; no wait, you probably haven’t), he informed me that there have been reports of a secret initiation ritual among the Hejis that may involve a form of subliminal poetics as yet unknown to us.

The 100 Day Project

The 100 Day Project

The 100 Day Project is a creativity excavation. It’s about unearthing dormant or unrealized creativity by committing to a daily practice everyday for 100 days.
Creativity is a skill. The more we practice, the more skilled we become. Practice takes time. Practice takes commitment. Practice is a radical act in this speeded up world. Through practice, we develop a creative habit. Through habit, we reconnect with and know ourselves again as a creative being.

I started this, my third, 100 Day Project on June 12th, 2018. My project is to write at least one first-draft stanza inspired by a poem, a quote, an idea, a painting—anything, really (or nothing at all) and to write at least one hundred shitty first-draft words of my novel. I’ll post the results here.

Enjoy!

TIME AGAIN

Time again to hold your hand
and see again with your eyes,
to topple walls of sound unbidden,
to drink fire
and smoke of resurrection.

Burt thought furiously. He looked at her big almond eyes. I really do want to see her again.

DAY 9 (June 20th, 2018)

I once met a woman like you.
She, too, fears God,
despite the devil salivating inside her.
I will teach her to tame it and
how to be loved.

DAY 8 (June 19th, 2018)

Where goes this road?
Writhing like a wounded serpent
To hell with the odyssey
I fall to my knees and from my
eyes fly iron-tipped spears
to slay the black mountain.

Still
I cannot see past it.

A poem titled DARK LOOKS by Denise Levertov:

Strange: today the mountain
—circled by curly cherub clouds
beyond the glittering lake
and vague middle-distance—

looks dark, not snowy,
at odds with the benign
October light, a frowning
humorless old prophet,

sullen among the putti

like flags on some war-torn hill
in the middle of no one cares.

DAY 2 (June 13th, 2018)

IF I COULD REACH

If I could reach
into the past
and pluck a petal
from that ghostly flower
I’d pull you back
and tell you that I loved you.

In your dying hours
I saw that you tried
to do the things you loved
in life, but you were so tired.

Death hung around your neck
and pulled your head down
so that all you could do
was stare into the dim morning—
dimmer now,
grayer now.
You crawled into the bitter end
with all the life left to you.

I pluck you from the past, dear one
and make you whole again.
